LCCC Hosts First Chess Tournament

Sixteen chess players competed in a tournament at the LCCC Library on January 19, 2008.

Players were from Columbia High School, the LCCC Chess Club, and Oak Hall School in Gainesville.

Four teams played three rounds of chess composed of 30 minute games.

One LCCC team had several players from the Lake City community.

LCCC Math instructor Peter Gray coordinated the tournament and made sure that every team went home with a prize!

First prize team won the trophy, a gift certificate, and the Excalibur Advanced Electronic Chess game.

Mr. Tim Tusing, Chess Coach from Oak Hall School and District representative for the Florida Scholastic Chess League, is explaining to the players the tournament rules. Did you know that hovering over a chess piece is the same as touching the piece?

Fourth place was awarded to the Coumbia County High School team. (The LCCC chess club "loaned" a couple of players to the high school to complete their team.)
Third place was awarded to LCCC 2 Team, with LCCC Chess President Jarrod Harris.

2nd Place was awarded to the adult LCCC team, with Leon Paulk and LCCC English instructor Dave Hurner.

Congratulations to the winning team from Oak Hall School! Yes, that's right, the oldest team member is in the fifth grade!

For hosting the tournament, Mr. Tusing gave the LCCC Chess Club eight sets of tournament chess boards!

The LCCC Chess Club would like to extend their appreciation to Mr. Tusing and Mr. Gray for coordinating this tournament.
